Same Thing For You
Crowd Pleaser
The Invisibles
Where My Heart Lies
Feelin' Fine
Don't Cry
You Got Me
No Stranger To Love
Here We Are
Backseat Driver

same thing for you

i love you in this way
it takes so many days to realize
i found where you are most tender
a hidden injury that still hurts
and at first I was surprised
you’ve got wings but underneath them
is a place you hide
and coincide with sometimes
and after I got used to that
gradually things grew on me
and led me to decide

I’ll be the same thing for you
I’ll let you see right through me
I’ll abandon all my crutches and run
As if falling was part of the freedom
That we both have won

sometimes in your sleep
you say things in my mind I underline
you’re not a man of words
but I want to put them to you
make you one of my kind
and after your confessions
I know I’ve got some of my own
it takes one to know one
even if we’ve got different reasons
for feeling alone

I’ll be the same thing for you
I’ll let you see right through me
I’ll abandon all my crutches and run
As if falling was part of the freedom
That we both have won

the sun’s always setting somewhere
and the sun sets here, too
and your arms are still around me
or whose arms are around who?

I’ll be the same thing for you
I’ll let you see right through me
I’ll abandon all my crutches and run
As if falling was part of the freedom
That we--
I’ll be the same thing for you
I’ll let you see right through me
I’ll abandon all my crutches and run
Run, run, run, run!
As if falling was part of the freedom
As if falling was part of the freedom
As if falling was part of the freedom
That we both have won
Both have won
Both have won

Crowd Pleaser

You’re a crowd pleaser
You’re a born teaser
You come by it honestly
It’s not who you want to be
You’ve been acting restlessly
But we all do agree
You represent our dreams

you pull it off easily
brush through the door breezily
you’re every academic’s envy
larger than life it seems
designed for the big screen
and did I mention
you represent our dreams?

but sometimes you get it all wrong
sometimes I see you wandering home all alone
sometimes I wish I never wrote this song
and never put you on a pedestal at all…

You’re a crowd pleaser
You’re a born teaser
You come by it honestly
It’s not who you want to be
You’ve been acting restlessly
But we all do agree
You represent our dreams

you’re on the front page
you’re in the Golden Age
you’re at every award show
you are the first prize
the twinkle is in your eyes
and an unexplainable glow

sometimes you disappear for a while
sometimes we forget about your smile
sometimes life can be dismal
and we don’t want a clown
hanging around
reminding us how things used to be—

You’re a crowd pleaser
You’re a born teaser
You come by it honestly
It’s not who you want to be
You’ve been acting restlessly
But we all do agree
You represent our dreams

The Invisibles

you don’t really like me much at all
i don’t think that I even care at all
we put in our time
but we hit a wall
sometimes if you make a bad call
well, then you make a bad call

you were looking for someone to be on your arm
i was looking for someone who wouldn’t harm me
we went through the motions
made no mistakes
but I guess that’s not all that it takes
that’s not all that it takes

And if you look at a picture of us
We were smiling for the camera
Color-coordinated sofas
Put the photos on the mantle piece
You might think it’s easy
To copy what’s on TV
But when you turn the whole thing off
There’s nothing left of us

you don’t even know me much at all
i don’t think that I ever told you anything important at all
and from the outside
we were having a ball
sometimes if you got it all
well, then you don’t got it all

And if you look at a picture of us
We were smiling for the camera
Color-coordinated sofas
Put the photos on the mantle piece
You might think it’s easy
To copy what’s on TV
But when you turn the whole thing off
There’s nothing left of us…

Where My Heart Lies

of little things i am unsure
the hum of the refrigerator
shavings in the pencil sharpener
a blur in the rearview mirror
footprints on the kitchen floor
the creaking of the front porch door
clothesline playing tug-of-war
and our scarecrows in the middle

But I know where my heart lies
I know that it’s over-sized
I know just how hard it tries
To beat me when I play
So I, I tend to give in anyway

you wander past the gate one day
and the sparrows scatter away
people, they got nothing to say
but they know you’re gone
they know you’re gone

But I know where my heart lies
I know that it’s over-sized
I know just how hard it tries
To beat me when I play
I know all the telltale signs
Yes, I’m familiar with every single butterfly
And I tried, and I tried
To keep up my disguise
But my heart beats me
Oh, my heart beats me
Oh, my heart beats me
My heart beats me
My heart beats me
Every time
Oh, every time

Feeling Fine

i’m in too deep to get out now
starting over means too much to throw out, so
trudging on, and pushing through somehow
keep your shoulder to the grind
nobody likes to hear complaining
bad enough when it’s sunny
let alone when it’s raining, so
complete the task, get over the blues
and don’t let any news affect you

got my suitcase in my hand
taking myself to the next show
can’t afford to take the band
and my suitcase won’t fit my piano
i’m sitting in my hotel room
muddy waters in the tap and on the radio
and I know I’m in a long line of my kind
who smile for the cameras
and play for their souls

And oh, it’s true, I could be feeling better
And oh, it’s true, I found myself avoiding looking in the mirror
And oh, it’s true, every now and then a sad song comes on the radio
But otherwise I’m feeling fine!

and I see us as an army
‘cause then I don’t feel so alone
(maybe that’s why people go on fighting
has nothing to do with right or wrong…)

and by the end of the night
i got it out of my system
hope you’re all feeling alright
be back tomorrow again
hope you’re all feeling alright
be back tomorrow again

And oh, it’s true, I could be feeling better
And oh, it’s true, I found myself avoiding looking in the mirror
And oh, it’s true, every now and then a sad song comes on the radio
But otherwise I’m feeling fine

Don't Cry

got a bad habit of keeping things to myself
got a lot of dust gathering up on the shelf
and somebody i just met asking me about me
what can you do when you’re travelling alone?
should just spend the money and make a call home
‘cause now I got more than I asked for with this shoulder to cry on
got a long journey up ahead
don’t think i’ll get rich, i said
but what i meant is that it doesn’t matter, anyway

Oh, don’t cry no more, darling, for me
I don’t need more of your sympathy
I ‘ve been feeling sorry for myself for a while now
Oh, don’t cry no more, darling, for me
I got to get over these things
Else I might just stay here in your arms, forever

it’s not like i mind these arms around me
it feels so good sometimes
and everybody gets lonely
you need a little comfort, like a drug
--but i gotta walk away
before i am your junkie

Oh, don’t cry no more, darling, for me
I don’t need more of your sympathy
I ‘ve been feeling sorry for myself for a while now
Don’t cry no more, darling, for me
I got to get over these things
Else I might just stay here in your arms
Might just stay here in here in your arms
Might just stay here
I might just stay here in your arms, forever

You Got Me

take your job and you take your pay
go down the same staircase every day
the #9 bus, then the subway
come back home and do it all again
6’3” and basketball scars
got your dreams but just a penny jar
so you live for your days off that are so short
and don’t you wonder what it’s all for?

but I know you got more
statistics never tell the whole score
and I’m banging on your door
‘cause you found a way to my heart

you got me
feeling free
in the middle of a concrete jungle
baby, it’s a miracle to me
you got me
to really see
we ain’t so stuck
we got more than what you see

put you in a box so they know what you’re about
the city’s in a grid, so go figure it out
freedom to choose— but don’t you go out of the lines
it’s hard for a shaky hand when you’re painting all the time!
that’s the part of it that I can’t stand
I chose you just for who you are, despite all their demands
I’m tired of the things that box us in
‘cause what we make together, baby, is a perfect combination

and I know you got more
statistics never tell the whole score
and I’m banging on your door
‘cause you found a way to my heart!

you got me
feeling free
in the middle of a concrete jungle
baby, it’s a miracle to me
you got me
to really see
we ain’t so stuck
we got more than what you--
oh you do, you do, you do
in the middle of a concrete jungle, baby, it’s a miracle
yeah, feelin, feelin’ free
we ain’t so stuck we got more than what you see

(really got this thing for you, baby
really got it bad!
they wanna know in twenty words or less
but all I know is that it’s something I gotta have!)

you got me
feeling free…

No Stranger to Love

in all war there is some selfishness
if you’d give up what they’re after
there wouldn’t be a fight
so why do we argue so much, baby
in the war zone of this living room, tonight?
and when is it time to state “surrender”
allow invasion, for the sake of peace?
and when should I stand up, bravely,
state my claim, despite what bleeds, and what still beats?

I’m wounded, as you are
At least I see some blood
In one hand, an arrow
The other, a sword
I’m no stranger to love

why do I cherish what I sacrifice
my flags, my laws, and oh, how I want my way
in all war there is some selfishness
in love there is a lot to give away

I’m wounded, as you are
At least I see some blood
In one hand, an arrow
The other, a sword
I’m no stranger to love

Here We Are

here we are
trying to break each other’s hearts
and I think it’s safe to say
we’ve succeeded so far
but then there’s the next part
when one of us shows her cards
altogether ends the game
and becomes the queen of bleeding hearts
(again)

I love you most
when you’re not looking
but you don’t know
since you don’t see
ships that pass each other
in the night
are the same as boats lost out to sea
boats lost out to sea

to see if we can meet
see if we can beat
this pattern and routine

even the TV makes love
into a game
only the faces always change
it will take a stack of decks
before they run out, I guess
but if you hardly ever win at solitaire
why do we always play?
the king and queen of bleeding hearts
(again)

Backseat Driver

don’t wanna be your backseat driver
just gonna sit here, right beside you
watching the windshield wipers
and the water that they move
not gonna give directions
go on about my convictions
just listen to the hum of the engine
and let the horizon soothe you

And if you want a road to drive on
I could name a few
And if you want a song to sing
I could think of so many that would suit you
And if you wanna hear a story
Oh, have I got one to tell you
Baby, I got something to tell you

you said you wanna be somewhere you’re clean again
like the sidewalk after the summer rain
i said i wanna be loved no matter where I am
all the places and the roads that lead to them
just gonna be with you
yeah, I’ll be there beside you

And if you want a road to drive on
I could name a few
And if you want a song to sing
I could think of so many that would suit you
And if you wanna hear a story
Oh, have I got one to tell you
Baby, I got something to tell you
Baby, I got something to tell you
Baby, I got something to tell you…
